What is Overuse Injuries?

Overuse injuries develop gradually when muscles, tendons, bones, or joints are subjected to repetitive stress without adequate time for recovery and adaptation. Unlike acute injuries that occur from a single traumatic event, overuse injuries build up over days, weeks, or months until the cumulative damage exceeds the body's ability to repair itself.

These injuries are particularly common among Malaysian athletes and recreational sportspeople who train regularly in activities such as running, badminton, futsal, and cycling. Weekend warriors who suddenly increase their training volume or intensity are also at high risk.

Common overuse injuries include tendinopathies such as tennis elbow and Achilles tendinopathy, stress fractures, shin splints, and bursitis. Symptoms typically begin as a mild ache during or after activity and gradually worsen until the pain becomes constant and limits performance.

Several factors contribute to overuse injuries, including training errors such as increasing distance or intensity too quickly, poor biomechanics, inadequate footwear, muscle imbalances, and insufficient rest between training sessions. Identifying and correcting these factors is essential for successful treatment.

At Kinesio Rehab, we specialise in diagnosing the root cause of overuse injuries and designing rehabilitation programmes that not only relieve your symptoms but also correct the underlying factors that caused the injury in the first place.

What's Included in Our Treatment

  • Detailed biomechanical and movement pattern assessment
  • Training load analysis and activity modification guidance
  • Progressive tendon and tissue loading programme
  • Manual therapy for pain relief and tissue mobility
  • Muscle imbalance correction and targeted strengthening exercises
  • Dry needling for chronic tendon and muscle pain
  • Running or sport-specific gait analysis and correction
  • Structured return-to-training programme with load management

Common Problems We Solve

Gradual onset of pain that worsens with continued activity
Morning stiffness and pain at the start of exercise that eases then returns
Persistent tendon pain that does not improve with rest alone
Recurring injury in the same area despite taking time off
Reduced performance and inability to train at previous levels

Our Overuse Injuries Treatment Process

1

Assessment

We conduct a detailed assessment that includes your training history, activity levels, and symptom progression. We examine the affected area and perform a full biomechanical assessment to identify movement patterns, muscle imbalances, and loading issues that contribute to the injury.

2

Diagnosis

We identify the specific tissue involved and the stage of the overuse injury. We also determine the contributing factors such as training errors, equipment issues, biomechanical faults, or muscle weaknesses that have led to the injury developing.

3

Treatment Plan

We create a rehabilitation programme that addresses both the injured tissue and the root causes of the overuse injury. This includes a modified training schedule that allows continued activity while the tissue recovers, along with clear progression milestones.

4

Active Treatment

Treatment combines targeted loading exercises for the injured tissue with manual therapy, dry needling, and biomechanical correction. We work with you to modify your training approach and gradually build the tissue tolerance needed to handle your sport demands.

5

Recovery & Prevention

We guide your return to full training with a structured load progression plan that prevents recurrence. You receive a long-term maintenance programme including strength exercises, warm-up routines, and training principles that protect against future overuse injuries.

Why Choose Kinesio Rehab for Overuse Injuries

Overuse injuries require a different approach from acute injuries, and at Kinesio Rehab, we have the expertise to manage them effectively. Our physiotherapists understand that simply resting an overuse injury is rarely sufficient and that successful treatment must address the underlying cause.

We use detailed biomechanical assessments and training load analysis to identify exactly why the injury developed and what needs to change. Our progressive loading programmes are designed to build tissue resilience while keeping you as active as possible throughout rehabilitation.

From our Putra Heights clinic, we have successfully treated hundreds of Malaysian athletes and active individuals dealing with persistent overuse conditions.

Overuse Injuries — FAQs

Will rest alone fix my overuse injury?

Rest alone is usually not enough to resolve an overuse injury. While reducing load provides temporary pain relief, the underlying factors that caused the injury, such as muscle imbalances, poor biomechanics, or training errors, remain unchanged. Without addressing these root causes, the injury typically returns when you resume activity.

Can I continue training with an overuse injury?

In most cases, you can continue some form of training with modifications. Your physiotherapist will help you adjust your training volume, intensity, and type of activity to stay active while allowing the injured tissue to recover. Complete rest is usually only necessary for severe cases such as stress fractures.

How do I know if my pain is an overuse injury or something more serious?

Overuse injuries typically develop gradually with pain that initially occurs only during or after activity. If you experience sudden severe pain, significant swelling, inability to bear weight, or symptoms such as numbness and tingling, you should seek professional assessment promptly as these may indicate a more serious condition.
