Sports Injury Recovery: Frequently Asked Questions

When should I see a physiotherapist for a sports injury?

You should see a physiotherapist as soon as possible after a sports injury — ideally within the first 48–72 hours. Early assessment and treatment can significantly speed up recovery and prevent the injury from worsening. If you experience sudden pain, swelling, inability to bear weight, joint instability, or pain that doesn't improve with rest, book an appointment immediately.

How long does sports injury recovery take?

Recovery time depends on the type and severity of the injury. Minor muscle strains may resolve in 2–4 weeks. Ligament sprains typically take 6–12 weeks. ACL tears requiring surgery need 9–12 months of structured rehabilitation. We set clear milestones and use objective testing to guide your return to sport safely — not just based on time alone.

Can I still exercise with a sports injury?

In most cases, yes — with modifications. Complete rest is rarely the best approach. We design active rehabilitation programs that allow you to maintain fitness while protecting the injured area. This might include cross-training, modified exercises, or working on other areas of your body while the injury heals.

What's the difference between physiotherapy and sports massage?

Sports massage focuses on soft tissue relaxation and recovery. Physiotherapy is a comprehensive clinical service that includes assessment, diagnosis, manual therapy, exercise prescription, and rehabilitation planning. A physiotherapist can identify the root cause of your injury, design a structured recovery program, and clear you for return to sport — sports massage alone cannot do this.

Do I need a referral to see a sports physiotherapist in Malaysia?

No. In Malaysia, you can see a physiotherapist directly without a doctor's referral. However, if your injury may require imaging (X-ray, MRI) or surgical consultation, we will refer you to the appropriate specialist. If you have insurance, check whether your policy requires a referral for physiotherapy claims.
