What is Sciatica?

Sciatica refers to pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the buttock and down the back of each leg. It is not a condition in itself but rather a symptom of an underlying problem that is irritating or compressing the sciatic nerve.

The pain can range from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or even an electric shock-like jolt that shoots down the leg. Some people also experience numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the affected leg or foot.

The most common cause of sciatica is a herniated disc pressing on a nerve root in the lower spine. Other causes include spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome, or degenerative disc disease.

Prolonged sitting, obesity, and physically demanding occupations increase the risk.

Sciatica can be incredibly disruptive to daily life. Simple activities like standing up from a chair, walking, or even lying in bed can become painful ordeals.

Many patients find it difficult to work, sleep, or participate in family activities.

At Kinesio Rehab, we identify the specific cause of your sciatica and target treatment accordingly. Our evidence-based approach has helped many patients find significant relief within weeks, often avoiding the need for injections or surgery.

Our Sciatica Treatment Process

1

Assessment

We conduct a thorough examination including specific nerve tension tests, neurological screening, and movement assessment to identify the exact cause and level of your sciatic nerve irritation.

2

Diagnosis

We determine whether your sciatica is caused by a disc herniation, spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome, or another source, as this directly determines the most effective treatment approach.

3

Treatment Plan

We design a targeted treatment plan addressing the specific cause of your sciatica, combining immediate pain relief strategies with exercises to resolve the underlying nerve compression.

4

Active Treatment

Through regular sessions, we use a combination of manual therapy, nerve mobilisation, specific directional exercises, and progressive strengthening to decompress the nerve and resolve symptoms.

5

Recovery & Prevention

Once symptoms resolve, we strengthen the spinal stabilisers, correct contributing factors like posture and lifting habits, and establish a maintenance routine to prevent recurrence.

Why Choose Kinesio Rehab for Sciatica

Sciatica treatment is not one-size-fits-all, and at Kinesio Rehab, we never treat it as such. The key to effective sciatica treatment is accurately identifying the underlying cause, and our detailed assessment process ensures we get this right.

A disc-related sciatica requires a very different approach from piriformis syndrome, and treating the wrong cause wastes time and prolongs suffering. Our physiotherapists are skilled in both spinal manual therapy and targeted exercise prescription for nerve-related conditions.

We also understand the psychological impact of persistent pain and provide reassurance and education alongside physical treatment. Our goal is to get you out of pain and back to your life as quickly as possible.

Sciatica — FAQs

How long does sciatica take to get better?

Most cases of sciatica improve significantly within four to eight weeks with appropriate physiotherapy. However, the timeline depends on the underlying cause and severity. Disc-related sciatica may take longer than piriformis syndrome. Consistent adherence to your treatment programme and home exercises is the most important factor in recovery speed.

Should I rest in bed if I have sciatica?

Prolonged bed rest is not recommended for sciatica and can actually slow recovery. While short rest periods during acute flare-ups are acceptable, staying as active as possible within pain limits promotes faster healing. Your physiotherapist will guide you on which activities are safe and beneficial.

What is the difference between sciatica and general back pain?

General back pain is localised to the back area, while sciatica involves pain that travels down the leg along the sciatic nerve path. Sciatica often includes neurological symptoms like numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg that are not typically present with ordinary back pain. The treatment approach differs significantly.

Can sciatica come back after it has been treated?

Sciatica can recur, particularly if the underlying contributing factors are not addressed. This is why our treatment programme includes not just symptom relief but also core strengthening, postural correction, and lifestyle modifications designed to minimise the risk of future episodes.
