What is Slip Disc / Herniated Disc?
A slip disc, medically known as a herniated or prolapsed disc, occurs when the soft gel-like centre of a spinal disc pushes through a tear in the tough outer layer. This displaced disc material can press on nearby spinal nerves, causing pain, numbness, or weakness that can radiate into the arms or legs.
Despite the common name, the disc does not actually slip out of place. It remains attached to the spine but bulges or ruptures outward, much like squeezing a jam doughnut until the filling pushes out one side.
Slip discs most commonly affect the lower back (lumbar spine), particularly the L4-L5 and L5-S1 levels. They can also occur in the neck, though this is less frequent.
Lifting heavy objects with poor form, prolonged sitting, and age-related disc degeneration are the most common causes.
The good news is that the majority of herniated discs improve significantly with conservative treatment. Research shows that approximately 90 percent of patients with lumbar disc herniation get better within six to twelve weeks with proper physiotherapy and activity modification.
At Kinesio Rehab, we use a combination of manual therapy, targeted exercises, and postural education to reduce disc pressure, relieve nerve irritation, and help you return to your normal activities safely.

Our Slip Disc / Herniated Disc Treatment Process
Assessment
We perform a thorough spinal examination including neurological testing of reflexes, sensation, and muscle strength. We assess movement patterns, posture, and identify which positions relieve or worsen your symptoms.
Diagnosis
Based on clinical findings, we determine the likely level of disc involvement and the extent of nerve compression. We correlate this with any imaging results you may have.
Treatment Plan
We create a personalised programme that starts with pain reduction and disc pressure management, then progresses to core strengthening and functional rehabilitation.
Active Treatment
Regular sessions combine manual therapy, directional exercises to encourage the disc to centralise, core stabilisation training, and nerve mobilisation techniques to reduce radiating symptoms.
Recovery & Prevention
We build a strong foundation of spinal stability, teach proper body mechanics for lifting and daily activities, and design a maintenance programme to prevent recurrence.
Why Choose Kinesio Rehab for Slip Disc / Herniated Disc
Slip disc pain can be debilitating and frightening, especially when it causes leg symptoms. At Kinesio Rehab, our therapists are trained in evidence-based spinal rehabilitation techniques including the McKenzie method, which has strong research support for disc-related problems.
We take time to educate you about your condition, because understanding what is happening reduces fear and helps you make better decisions about movement. Our thorough approach addresses not just the pain but the underlying factors like poor posture and weak core muscles that contributed to the disc problem in the first place.
We help the vast majority of our disc patients avoid surgery through targeted conservative treatment.
Slip Disc / Herniated Disc — FAQs
Can a slip disc heal on its own?
Yes, the body can gradually reabsorb the herniated disc material over time, and many disc herniations resolve with conservative treatment. Physiotherapy accelerates this process by reducing pressure on the disc, decreasing inflammation, and creating the optimal conditions for healing. Most patients see significant improvement within six to twelve weeks.
Is it safe to exercise with a slip disc?
Specific exercises are not only safe but essential for disc recovery. The key is performing the right exercises for your specific situation. Your physiotherapist will identify which movements help centralise the disc and which to avoid. Bed rest beyond a day or two is actually counterproductive for disc healing.
When should I consider surgery for a slip disc?
Surgery is typically only recommended for disc herniation if you have progressive neurological deficits such as worsening leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control (a medical emergency), or symptoms that have not improved after six to twelve weeks of dedicated conservative treatment.
How can I prevent my disc from herniating again?
Maintaining strong core muscles, using proper lifting technique, maintaining good posture, staying at a healthy weight, and remaining physically active are the best ways to prevent recurrence. Your physiotherapist will teach you specific core exercises and movement strategies to protect your spine long-term.
Can I sit at a desk with a slip disc?
Prolonged sitting can aggravate disc symptoms, but with proper ergonomic setup and regular movement breaks, most people can manage desk work during recovery. Your physiotherapist will advise you on chair setup, ideal sitting duration, and specific exercises to perform at your desk throughout the day.
