What is Neck Slipped Disc / Cervical Disc Herniation?

A neck slipped disc, medically known as a cervical disc herniation, occurs when the soft inner material of a disc in the neck pushes through a tear in its tough outer wall. This displaced disc material can press on the spinal nerves that exit the cervical spine, causing pain that radiates into the shoulder, arm, and hand.

The cervical spine has six discs that act as cushions between the seven neck vertebrae. The discs most commonly affected are at the C5-C6 and C6-C7 levels, which correspond to the nerves supplying the arm and hand.

Cervical disc herniations can result from a sudden injury such as a car accident or heavy lifting, but more often they develop gradually from repeated strain, poor posture, or age-related disc degeneration. People who spend long hours at a desk or frequently look down at devices are at increased risk.

The symptoms can range from mild neck discomfort to severe shooting pain down the arm, often described as an electric shock sensation. Numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand or fingers may also develop depending on which nerve is compressed.

At Kinesio Rehab, we use evidence-based techniques to reduce disc pressure, relieve nerve irritation, and restore normal neck function, helping most patients avoid the need for surgical intervention.

Our Neck Slipped Disc / Cervical Disc Herniation Treatment Process

1

Assessment

We perform a thorough cervical spine examination including neurological testing of reflexes, sensation, and muscle strength in the arms and hands. We identify which disc level is likely affected and assess the severity of nerve involvement.

2

Diagnosis

Based on your symptom pattern and clinical findings, we determine the likely disc level and degree of nerve compression. We may recommend imaging if symptoms are severe or if there are signs of significant neurological deficit.

3

Treatment Plan

We design a treatment plan focused on reducing disc pressure and nerve irritation in the acute phase, followed by progressive strengthening and postural correction to prevent recurrence.

4

Active Treatment

Regular sessions combine directional exercises to centralise symptoms, manual therapy to improve spinal mobility, nerve gliding techniques, and progressive strengthening of the cervical stabilisers.

5

Recovery & Prevention

We build a long-term programme of neck strengthening exercises, postural habits, and ergonomic strategies to protect your cervical discs and significantly reduce the risk of future herniations.

Why Choose Kinesio Rehab for Neck Slipped Disc / Cervical Disc Herniation

A cervical disc herniation can stop you from working, sleeping, or even turning your head. At Kinesio Rehab, our physiotherapists are experienced in managing this condition conservatively. We use the McKenzie method and other directional preference approaches to identify the specific movements that reduce your disc pressure and centralise your symptoms.

Our treatment goes beyond pain relief to address the underlying postural and muscular factors that contributed to the herniation in the first place. We carefully monitor your neurological status throughout treatment to ensure you are progressing safely.

With our Putra Heights clinic and home visit service across Klang Valley, we make it easy to maintain the consistent treatment schedule that is critical for disc recovery.

Neck Slipped Disc / Cervical Disc Herniation — FAQs

Can a cervical disc herniation heal without surgery?

Yes, the majority of cervical disc herniations improve significantly with conservative treatment. Research shows that approximately 80 to 90 percent of patients with cervical disc herniation respond well to physiotherapy within six to twelve weeks. The herniated disc material often shrinks naturally over time through a process called resorption, while physiotherapy manages symptoms and restores function during this healing period.

How long does recovery from a neck slipped disc take?

Most patients notice meaningful improvement in pain within two to four weeks of starting physiotherapy. Full recovery typically takes six to twelve weeks, though some patients with more severe herniations may require three to six months. Factors that influence recovery time include the size of the herniation, the degree of nerve compression, and how consistently you follow your exercise programme.

Is it safe to exercise with a cervical disc herniation?

Yes, appropriate exercise is actually one of the most effective treatments for cervical disc herniation. The key is doing the right exercises in the right way. Your physiotherapist will prescribe specific movements that reduce disc pressure and avoid those that could worsen the herniation. Staying active within guidelines promotes faster healing compared to complete rest.

What sleeping position is best for a neck slipped disc?

Sleeping on your back with a supportive pillow that maintains the natural curve of your neck is generally the best position. Side sleeping with a pillow that fills the gap between your shoulder and ear is also acceptable. Avoid sleeping on your stomach as this forces the neck into excessive rotation. Your physiotherapist can recommend specific pillow types suited to your condition.
