What is Lower Back Pain / Lumbago?
Lower back pain is one of the most common health complaints worldwide, affecting an estimated 80 percent of people at some point in their lives. It can range from a dull, constant ache to a sudden sharp pain that makes movement feel impossible.
The lower back, or lumbar spine, bears the majority of the body's weight and is subjected to significant mechanical stress during everyday activities like bending, lifting, twisting, and even sitting. This makes it particularly vulnerable to injury and strain.
Most lower back pain is mechanical in nature, meaning it comes from the muscles, joints, ligaments, or discs of the spine rather than from a serious underlying disease. Common triggers include poor posture, prolonged sitting, sudden awkward movements, and inadequate core muscle strength.
While acute lower back pain often improves within a few weeks, many people develop recurring episodes that progressively impact their work, exercise, and quality of life. Without addressing the root cause, each episode can leave the back slightly more vulnerable to the next one.
At Kinesio Rehab, we go beyond temporary pain relief to identify and correct the factors that make your back vulnerable. Our approach combines hands-on treatment for immediate relief with a structured exercise programme that builds lasting spinal resilience.

Our Lower Back Pain / Lumbago Treatment Process
Assessment
We evaluate your spinal movement, posture, core muscle activation, hip flexibility, and daily movement habits to build a complete picture of what is contributing to your back pain.
Diagnosis
We identify the primary pain generators and contributing factors, whether they are joint stiffness, muscle weakness, disc involvement, or movement pattern problems.
Treatment Plan
We design a multi-faceted treatment plan that addresses both your immediate pain and the underlying causes, with clear goals for pain reduction, functional improvement, and long-term prevention.
Active Treatment
Regular sessions combine manual therapy for pain relief and mobility with progressive exercises to strengthen your core, improve flexibility, and retrain proper movement patterns.
Recovery & Prevention
We build your spinal resilience through a sustainable exercise programme, teach self-management strategies for minor flare-ups, and ensure you have the knowledge to keep your back healthy long-term.

Lower Back Pain / Lumbago — FAQs
Is lower back pain serious?
The vast majority of lower back pain is mechanical and not related to a serious underlying condition. However, it is important to see a physiotherapist for a proper assessment, especially if you experience numbness in the groin area, loss of bladder or bowel control, progressive leg weakness, or pain following a significant injury. These symptoms require immediate medical attention.
Should I avoid exercise if my back hurts?
Avoiding all exercise is one of the worst things you can do for back pain. While you may need to modify activities during acute pain, gentle movement and appropriate exercises actually promote healing and prevent the back from becoming weaker and stiffer. Your physiotherapist will guide you on safe activities.
Why does my back pain keep coming back?
Recurrent back pain usually indicates that the underlying causes, such as core weakness, poor posture, stiff hips, or inadequate movement patterns, were not adequately addressed during previous episodes. Our rehabilitation programme specifically targets these root causes to break the cycle of recurring pain.
Is my posture causing my back pain?
Sustained poor posture, particularly prolonged sitting with a rounded lower back, can contribute significantly to back pain by placing excessive stress on the spinal discs and joints. However, posture is just one piece of the puzzle. Your physiotherapist will assess all contributing factors and address them as part of your treatment.
Do I need an MRI scan for my back pain?
Most lower back pain does not require an MRI scan. A thorough clinical assessment by a physiotherapist can identify the cause of pain and guide effective treatment in the majority of cases. MRI may be recommended if symptoms include significant nerve involvement, if symptoms are not improving as expected, or if surgery is being considered.
