What is Cervical Spondylosis?

Cervical spondylosis is a term used to describe age-related wear and tear affecting the bones, discs, and joints of the neck. It is essentially arthritis of the cervical spine, and it becomes increasingly common after the age of 40, with imaging studies showing some degree of degeneration in the majority of people over 60.

As the discs between the neck vertebrae lose moisture and shrink over time, the spaces between the bones narrow and the body responds by forming bone spurs. These changes can reduce the flexibility of the neck and, in some cases, compress nearby nerves or even the spinal cord itself.

Many people with cervical spondylosis experience a gradual onset of neck stiffness and a dull ache that may spread across the shoulders. Some develop headaches originating from the base of the skull, while others notice grinding or popping sensations when turning the head.

When nerves are compressed, symptoms can extend into the arms, causing pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness in the hands. This is known as cervical radiculopathy and requires careful management to prevent long-term nerve damage.

At Kinesio Rehab, we help patients manage cervical spondylosis through targeted exercises, manual therapy, and postural education that reduce pain, restore neck mobility, and slow the progression of symptoms.

Our Cervical Spondylosis Treatment Process

1

Assessment

We evaluate your cervical spine range of motion, joint stiffness, muscle strength, and neurological function. We also assess your posture and daily habits to identify factors contributing to your symptoms.

2

Diagnosis

Based on our clinical findings and your symptom pattern, we determine the severity of your cervical spondylosis, identify any nerve involvement, and rule out other conditions that may mimic similar symptoms.

3

Treatment Plan

We create a personalised plan that combines pain relief strategies with exercises to improve neck mobility, strengthen supporting muscles, and address the postural habits that accelerate cervical degeneration.

4

Active Treatment

Regular sessions include manual therapy to restore joint mobility, progressive strengthening of the deep neck stabilisers, and guided exercises to improve cervical movement control and reduce pain.

5

Recovery & Prevention

We equip you with a long-term maintenance programme of neck exercises and ergonomic strategies to manage your condition, slow further degeneration, and reduce the frequency of flare-ups.

Cervical Spondylosis — FAQs

Can cervical spondylosis be cured?

Cervical spondylosis is a degenerative condition and the structural changes to the spine cannot be reversed. However, the symptoms can be very effectively managed with physiotherapy. Most patients achieve significant pain relief, improved neck mobility, and better daily function through consistent treatment and exercise. The goal is to manage the condition so it does not limit your quality of life.

Is cervical spondylosis the same as cervical arthritis?

Yes, cervical spondylosis is essentially arthritis of the neck. It refers to the degenerative changes in the cervical spine including disc degeneration, bone spur formation, and joint wear. It is the most common cause of neck pain and stiffness in people over 50, and while it sounds serious, many people manage it very well with the right physiotherapy programme.

Will I need surgery for cervical spondylosis?

The vast majority of cervical spondylosis cases are managed successfully without surgery. Surgery is only considered when there is significant spinal cord compression causing balance or coordination problems, progressive nerve damage that does not respond to conservative treatment, or severe weakness in the hands. Your physiotherapist will monitor your progress and refer you if surgical consultation becomes necessary.

What makes cervical spondylosis worse?

Prolonged poor posture, especially forward head posture from desk work or phone use, is one of the biggest aggravating factors. Sleeping with an unsupportive pillow, carrying heavy bags on one shoulder, and a sedentary lifestyle also contribute to worsening symptoms. Your physiotherapist will help you identify and modify these daily habits.
