What is Tech Neck / Forward Head Posture?
Tech neck is a modern postural condition caused by the prolonged forward head position adopted when using smartphones, tablets, laptops, and computers. As the head tilts forward, the weight the neck muscles must support increases dramatically, from roughly five kilogrammes in a neutral position to as much as twenty-seven kilogrammes at a 60-degree angle.
This condition has become increasingly prevalent in Malaysia and worldwide as screen time continues to rise across all age groups. Office workers, students, gamers, and anyone who spends several hours a day looking at devices are particularly susceptible to developing tech neck.
The sustained forward head posture causes the muscles at the front of the neck and chest to tighten and shorten, while the muscles at the back of the neck and between the shoulder blades become overstretched and weak. This muscular imbalance gradually changes the natural curvature of the cervical spine.
Over time, tech neck can lead to chronic neck and shoulder pain, tension headaches, reduced neck mobility, and even contribute to the development of cervical spondylosis at a younger age. Some patients also experience upper back pain and thoracic stiffness as the postural changes cascade down the spine.
At Kinesio Rehab, we address tech neck by correcting the muscular imbalances, restoring proper cervical alignment, and equipping you with practical strategies to maintain good posture during your daily device use.

Our Tech Neck / Forward Head Posture Treatment Process
Assessment
We analyse your standing and sitting posture, measure the degree of forward head position, assess cervical and thoracic spine mobility, and evaluate the strength and flexibility of the key postural muscles.
Diagnosis
We identify the specific muscular imbalances and joint restrictions contributing to your tech neck, and determine whether any secondary conditions such as cervical disc issues or nerve irritation have developed.
Treatment Plan
We create a structured programme combining hands-on treatment with targeted exercises to correct your postural imbalances, along with practical ergonomic modifications for your specific work and device habits.
Active Treatment
Regular sessions address thoracic stiffness through mobilisation, release tight anterior muscles, and progressively strengthen the deep neck flexors and upper back postural muscles. We retrain your body to adopt and maintain correct posture naturally.
Recovery & Prevention
We establish sustainable postural habits, an ongoing exercise routine, and an ergonomic environment that prevents tech neck from returning. We teach you self-management strategies for long-term postural health.

Tech Neck / Forward Head Posture — FAQs
Can tech neck be fully corrected?
Yes, tech neck can be significantly corrected and in many cases fully resolved with consistent physiotherapy and postural retraining. The muscular imbalances that cause forward head posture respond well to targeted strengthening and stretching exercises. However, maintaining the correction requires ongoing attention to posture and regular exercise, especially if you continue to work at a desk or use devices frequently.
How long does it take to correct forward head posture?
Most patients notice meaningful improvement in their posture and pain levels within four to six weeks of consistent treatment and exercise. Fully retraining the postural muscles and establishing lasting habits typically takes two to three months. The timeline depends on how long the forward head posture has been present and how consistently you perform your exercises.
What is the best desk setup to prevent tech neck?
Your monitor should be at eye level and an arm length away, your chair should support the natural curve of your lower back, and your feet should be flat on the floor. For laptops, a separate keyboard and monitor stand are essential. Take posture breaks every 30 to 45 minutes to stretch and reset. Your physiotherapist can provide specific recommendations based on your individual workspace.
Is tech neck the same as text neck?
Yes, tech neck and text neck refer to the same condition. Text neck specifically highlights the forward head posture from looking down at a phone, while tech neck is a broader term that includes posture problems from all devices including computers and tablets. The underlying issue is the same: sustained forward head position causing strain on the cervical spine.
