What is Traumatic Brain Injury / TBI?
A traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when a sudden external force damages the brain. Common causes include road traffic accidents, falls, sports collisions, and workplace injuries.
The severity can range from a mild concussion to a severe injury requiring emergency surgery.
After a TBI, patients often struggle with a wide range of physical difficulties. These can include muscle weakness, poor coordination, balance problems, dizziness, and difficulty controlling movements on one or both sides of the body.
The effects of a TBI depend heavily on which part of the brain was injured and how extensive the damage is. Some patients may have difficulty walking, while others might struggle more with fine motor skills like writing or handling objects.
Recovery from a brain injury is often a long journey that requires patience and persistence. The brain is capable of remarkable adaptation, but progress tends to happen in stages rather than as a steady upward line.
Physiotherapy plays a central role in TBI rehabilitation. At Kinesio Rehab, we help patients rebuild physical function step by step, working on everything from basic bed mobility to complex activities like returning to sports or work.

Our Traumatic Brain Injury / TBI Treatment Process
Assessment
We conduct a detailed evaluation of your neurological function, physical abilities, balance, coordination, and current level of independence in daily activities.
Diagnosis
We identify the specific physical and functional deficits resulting from your brain injury, determining which areas need the most immediate attention and which will benefit from long-term rehabilitation.
Treatment Plan
We develop a phased rehabilitation plan with realistic milestones, starting from your current ability level and progressing toward your personal recovery goals.
Active Treatment
Regular physiotherapy sessions focus on rebuilding strength, improving balance and coordination, retraining walking patterns, and gradually increasing the complexity of functional tasks.
Recovery & Prevention
As function improves, we focus on sustaining gains, building resilience against setbacks, and planning a safe return to work, sports, or other activities as appropriate.

Traumatic Brain Injury / TBI — FAQs
How long does TBI rehabilitation take?
Recovery timelines vary enormously depending on the severity of the injury. Mild TBI patients may recover within weeks to months, while severe TBI rehabilitation can continue for a year or more. The most rapid improvements often occur in the first six months, but meaningful gains can be made well beyond that window with consistent effort.
When should physiotherapy start after a brain injury?
Physiotherapy should begin as soon as the patient is medically stable, often while still in the hospital. Early mobilisation helps prevent secondary complications like blood clots, pressure sores, and muscle wasting. Once discharged, ongoing outpatient or home-based physiotherapy continues the recovery process.
Can someone fully recover from a traumatic brain injury?
Many people with mild to moderate TBI make excellent recoveries and return to their previous activities. Severe TBI may result in permanent changes, but significant functional improvement is still achievable with dedicated rehabilitation. The goal is always to maximise your independence and quality of life.
Do you provide home-based TBI rehabilitation?
Yes, we offer home visit physiotherapy across the Klang Valley and Selangor. This is especially important for TBI patients in the early stages of recovery who may not be able to travel safely. Home-based rehabilitation also allows us to train you in the actual environment where you perform daily activities.
