What is Post-Fracture Rehab?
Fractures in older adults are a serious health event that can dramatically affect independence and quality of life. The most common fractures in the elderly population include hip fractures, wrist fractures from falling onto an outstretched hand, and vertebral compression fractures that may occur with minimal trauma.
Hip fractures are particularly concerning because they almost always require surgery and carry significant risks of prolonged immobility, muscle wasting, blood clots, and loss of confidence. In Malaysia, hip fracture rates are rising as the population ages, making effective rehabilitation more important than ever.
Wrist fractures, while less debilitating, can significantly impair the ability to perform daily tasks such as cooking, dressing, and personal hygiene. Vertebral compression fractures cause persistent back pain, loss of height, and a stooped posture that affects breathing and overall function.
Recovery from a fracture in an older adult requires more than just waiting for the bone to heal. The period of immobilisation or reduced activity leads to rapid muscle loss, joint stiffness, reduced cardiovascular fitness, and decreased confidence that must all be actively addressed.
At Kinesio Rehab, we provide structured post-fracture rehabilitation programmes specifically designed for elderly patients, guiding you safely from the earliest stages of healing through to a full return to your daily activities and independence.

Our Post-Fracture Rehab Treatment Process
Assessment
We assess your fracture healing status, surgical fixation type, weight-bearing restrictions, pain levels, joint mobility, muscle strength, balance, and current functional ability. We review your medical history to identify factors that may affect your recovery timeline.
Diagnosis
We identify the specific impairments resulting from your fracture and any period of immobilisation, including joint stiffness, muscle weakness, reduced cardiovascular fitness, impaired balance, and functional limitations that need to be addressed in rehabilitation.
Treatment Plan
We create a phased rehabilitation programme that respects your fracture healing timeline and surgical guidelines while progressing you as quickly and safely as possible. Clear milestones help you and your family understand what to expect at each stage of recovery.
Active Treatment
Regular sessions focus on restoring joint mobility, rebuilding muscle strength, retraining walking and balance, and practising the functional tasks you need for daily independence. We progress exercises in line with your fracture healing and surgical clearance.
Recovery & Prevention
As you regain independence, we shift focus to preventing future fractures through ongoing strength and balance training, bone health exercise, fall prevention strategies, and coordination with your doctor regarding osteoporosis management if needed.
Why Choose Kinesio Rehab for Post-Fracture Rehab
Post-fracture rehabilitation in elderly patients requires a careful balance between progressing recovery and respecting the healing process, and Kinesio Rehab excels at getting this balance right. Our physiotherapists have extensive experience working with older adults recovering from hip, wrist, and vertebral fractures following both surgical and conservative management.
Elderly patients face unique challenges, including the rapid loss of muscle mass during immobility, the psychological impact of a fall, and the importance of early mobilisation. We work closely with orthopaedic surgeons and geriatricians to ensure your rehabilitation aligns with your surgical protocols and medical needs.
Our patients in Putra Heights and across the Klang Valley consistently regain more function and independence than they thought possible after a fracture.
Post-Fracture Rehab — FAQs
When should physiotherapy start after a fracture?
Physiotherapy should begin as early as possible, often within the first few days after surgery for hip fractures, and as soon as your surgeon clears you for movement in other fracture types. Early mobilisation is critical in elderly patients to prevent complications such as blood clots, pneumonia, pressure sores, and rapid muscle wasting.
How long does rehabilitation take after a hip fracture?
Most elderly patients require three to six months of rehabilitation after a hip fracture to regain functional independence. The first six to eight weeks focus on protected mobility and basic strength, while the later phases focus on endurance, balance, and return to full daily activities. Some patients continue maintenance exercises long term.
Can home visit physiotherapy help after a fracture?
Home visit physiotherapy is often ideal in the early stages after a fracture, especially for elderly patients who have difficulty travelling. Our physiotherapists can work with you in your home environment, practise real-world tasks like navigating your own stairs and bathroom, and assess your home for fall hazards to prevent future incidents.
Will I be able to walk normally again after a hip fracture?
Many elderly patients do return to walking independently after a hip fracture, though recovery varies depending on your pre-fracture fitness, the type of fracture and surgery, and your commitment to rehabilitation. Structured physiotherapy significantly improves the likelihood of regaining independent walking and reduces long-term reliance on walking aids.
