What is Knee Osteoarthritis?

Knee osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition in which the cartilage that cushions the joint surfaces gradually wears away, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced function. It is the most common form of arthritis and a leading cause of mobility limitation in adults over 50.

The condition develops when the protective cartilage breaks down faster than the body can repair it. Over time, the bones may rub closer together, bone spurs can form, and the joint lining becomes inflamed, all of which contribute to pain and swelling.

Risk factors include age, excess body weight, previous knee injuries, repetitive joint stress from occupation or sport, and family history. Women are more likely to develop knee osteoarthritis than men, particularly after menopause.

Despite what many patients are told, osteoarthritis does not mean you must simply accept worsening pain and wait for joint replacement. Research consistently shows that exercise-based physiotherapy is one of the most effective treatments for knee osteoarthritis, often producing results comparable to painkillers but without the side effects.

At Kinesio Rehab, we design structured exercise programmes that reduce pain, strengthen the muscles supporting the knee, and help you maintain an active lifestyle for as long as possible.

Our Knee Osteoarthritis Treatment Process

1

Assessment

We evaluate your knee range of motion, muscle strength, walking pattern, and functional abilities such as stair climbing and squatting. We also assess contributing factors like body weight, previous injuries, and activity levels.

2

Diagnosis

We determine the severity of your osteoarthritis and identify which compartments of the knee are most affected. We assess how the condition is impacting your daily life and establish baseline measurements to track progress.

3

Treatment Plan

We create a tailored exercise programme that combines strengthening, mobility, and cardiovascular fitness. The plan balances joint loading with joint protection and includes strategies for managing flare-ups.

4

Active Treatment

Regular sessions include progressive strengthening exercises, manual therapy for pain and stiffness, and guidance on incorporating suitable physical activity into your weekly routine. We adjust the programme as your fitness and tolerance improve.

5

Recovery & Prevention

We establish a sustainable long-term exercise routine that keeps your knee strong and functional, educate you on managing flare-ups independently, and help delay or potentially avoid the need for joint replacement surgery.

Knee Osteoarthritis — FAQs

Will exercise make my knee osteoarthritis worse?

No. Appropriate exercise is one of the best treatments for knee osteoarthritis. Strengthening the muscles around the knee reduces the load on the joint and actually protects the remaining cartilage. Research consistently shows that people with knee osteoarthritis who exercise regularly experience less pain and better function than those who rest. Your physiotherapist will ensure the exercises are suitable for your joint.

Can physiotherapy delay the need for a knee replacement?

Yes. A structured physiotherapy programme that includes strengthening, mobility, and weight management can significantly delay or in some cases eliminate the need for knee replacement. Many patients who commit to regular exercise find that their symptoms improve enough to maintain a good quality of life without surgery.

Is walking good for knee osteoarthritis?

Walking is generally beneficial for knee osteoarthritis as it maintains joint mobility, strengthens muscles, and supports cardiovascular health. However, it should be combined with a strengthening programme for best results. If walking is painful, starting with shorter distances and gradually increasing is recommended, and your physiotherapist may suggest modifications to your footwear or walking pattern.

What is the best exercise for knee osteoarthritis?

The best exercise programme combines quadriceps and hip strengthening, gentle range of motion exercises, and low-impact cardiovascular activity such as cycling or swimming. Research shows that resistance training produces the greatest improvements in pain and function. Your physiotherapist will design a programme that targets your specific weaknesses and fits your current fitness level.
