What is Balance Training?

Good balance is something most people take for granted until it begins to decline. Your ability to stay upright depends on a complex interplay between your inner ear vestibular system, your vision, and the sensory receptors in your muscles and joints known as proprioceptors.

As we age, all three of these systems gradually become less efficient. The vestibular organs in the inner ear lose sensitivity, vision changes affect spatial awareness, and proprioceptive feedback from the feet and ankles diminishes.

This leads to increased unsteadiness, particularly on uneven surfaces, in dim lighting, or during quick movements.

Certain medical conditions can accelerate balance decline, including inner ear disorders such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), peripheral neuropathy from diabetes, stroke, and the effects of certain medications. Many older adults also develop a cautious, shuffling gait pattern that further compromises their stability.

The encouraging news is that balance is highly trainable at any age. Targeted exercises that challenge the vestibular, visual, and proprioceptive systems can produce measurable improvements in stability and significantly reduce the risk of falls.

At Kinesio Rehab, our balance training programme is individually tailored to address the specific systems contributing to your unsteadiness, using progressive exercises that safely push your limits and rebuild your confidence in movement.

Our Balance Training Treatment Process

1

Assessment

We perform a detailed balance assessment that tests your vestibular function, proprioception, visual reliance, ankle and hip strategy use, standing and walking balance, and functional reach. We use standardised tests to objectively measure your balance ability.

2

Diagnosis

We identify which balance systems are impaired and contributing to your instability. This may include vestibular hypofunction, reduced proprioception in the lower limbs, ankle weakness, visual dependency, or a combination of factors that we can specifically target.

3

Treatment Plan

We design a progressive balance training programme that targets your specific deficits. The plan includes exercises of graded difficulty, starting at a level that is safely challenging for you and advancing systematically as your balance improves.

4

Active Treatment

Sessions involve targeted exercises to retrain vestibular responses, improve proprioceptive awareness, strengthen ankle and hip stabilisers, and challenge your balance under progressively more demanding conditions including dual-task and real-world scenarios.

5

Recovery & Prevention

We provide you with a sustainable daily balance exercise routine and educate you on how to continue challenging your balance systems safely at home. Regular follow-up assessments track your progress and ensure your programme continues to advance appropriately.

Balance Training — FAQs

Can balance really be improved in older adults?

Yes, balance is highly adaptable at any age. Research consistently demonstrates that targeted balance training produces significant improvements in stability, even in adults over 80 years old. The key is performing exercises that specifically challenge the balance systems rather than general exercise alone.

What causes dizziness and how can physiotherapy help?

Dizziness in older adults is often caused by vestibular disorders such as BPPV, reduced blood flow when changing positions, or medication side effects. Vestibular rehabilitation physiotherapy uses specific head and body movement exercises to retrain the brain to process balance information correctly, which can significantly reduce or eliminate dizziness.

How long does it take to see improvement in balance?

Most people notice improvements in their steadiness and confidence within four to six weeks of regular balance training. Significant measurable improvements on standardised balance tests typically occur after eight to twelve weeks. Continued training produces further gains and helps maintain improvements long term.
