What is Scoliosis Management?
Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves sideways in an S-shape or C-shape instead of maintaining its normal straight alignment when viewed from behind. While mild curves may cause no symptoms at all, more significant curvatures can lead to pain, postural imbalance, and reduced mobility.
Most scoliosis cases are idiopathic, meaning the cause is unknown. Idiopathic scoliosis typically develops during the growth spurt just before puberty and is more common in girls.
Adult scoliosis can result from childhood scoliosis that was never treated or from degenerative changes in the spine.
People with scoliosis may notice that one shoulder sits higher than the other, one hip appears more prominent, or their clothes hang unevenly. Back pain is common, particularly in adults with scoliosis, and tends to develop on the concave side of the curve where muscles are chronically shortened and compressed.
While physiotherapy cannot straighten a curved spine, it is highly effective at managing symptoms, improving function, and in some cases, preventing curve progression. Specific exercise approaches like the Schroth method have strong evidence for scoliosis management.
At Kinesio Rehab, we provide individualised scoliosis exercise programmes that address your specific curve pattern, helping you maintain the best possible posture, reduce pain, and stay active.

Our Scoliosis Management Treatment Process
Assessment
We assess your spinal alignment, measure visible postural asymmetries, evaluate muscle balance, flexibility, and pain. We review any available X-rays to understand your curve type and magnitude.
Diagnosis
We classify your scoliosis curve pattern and identify the specific muscle imbalances, areas of stiffness, and pain sources that need to be addressed in your programme.
Treatment Plan
We design a curve-specific exercise programme that targets your unique scoliosis pattern, combining corrective exercises, strengthening, flexibility work, and postural retraining.
Active Treatment
Regular sessions teach and refine your specific corrective exercises, progress your strengthening programme, and use manual therapy to address pain and stiffness in affected areas.
Recovery & Prevention
We establish a sustainable home exercise routine you can maintain independently, teach self-monitoring strategies, and schedule periodic reviews to ensure your programme remains effective.
Why Choose Kinesio Rehab for Scoliosis Management
Scoliosis management requires a physiotherapist who understands the unique biomechanics of each curve type and knows how to design exercises that work with the body rather than against it. At Kinesio Rehab, our therapists are trained in scoliosis-specific exercise approaches that are backed by research.
We do not use a generic exercise programme; every exercise is chosen based on your specific curve pattern and adapted to your abilities. We focus on practical outcomes: reducing your pain, improving your posture, and helping you feel more confident in your body.
For adolescents with scoliosis, we work closely with families to make exercise a sustainable habit during the critical growing years when curve management is most important.
Scoliosis Management — FAQs
Can physiotherapy straighten a scoliosis curve?
Physiotherapy cannot fully straighten a structural scoliosis curve, but it can improve posture, reduce the apparent curvature, prevent progression in growing adolescents, and significantly reduce pain. In some cases, particularly with consistent exercise, measurable improvements in curve angle have been documented.
Is scoliosis painful?
Not all scoliosis causes pain, especially in adolescents with mild curves. However, many adults with scoliosis experience back pain related to muscle imbalances, joint compression, and postural strain. Physiotherapy is very effective at reducing scoliosis-related pain through targeted strengthening and flexibility exercises.
At what age should scoliosis treatment begin?
Scoliosis management can benefit people of any age. For adolescents, starting physiotherapy during the growth period is ideal, as this is when exercises can have the greatest impact on preventing curve progression. For adults, physiotherapy effectively manages pain and improves function regardless of how long the scoliosis has been present.
How often should I do my scoliosis exercises?
For best results, scoliosis-specific exercises should be performed daily, as the corrective effect is cumulative. Sessions with your physiotherapist are typically once or twice per week to learn and progress exercises, while the home programme is done daily. Consistency over weeks and months is what produces meaningful results.
