Shoulder Injury Recovery: How a Young Swimmer Got Back in the Pool
Swimmer's shoulder is one of the most common injuries in competitive swimming, affecting up to 91% of elite swimmers at some point in their career. This is the story of how physiotherapy helped a young competitive swimmer overcome a painful shoulder injury and return to the pool stronger than before.
The Challenge
A 16-year-old competitive swimmer came to Kinesio Rehab with persistent shoulder pain that had been worsening over several months. The pain was affecting her training, and she was unable to complete full sessions without significant discomfort. She had been advised to rest, but the pain returned every time she resumed training.
The Assessment
Our detailed assessment revealed several contributing factors: rotator cuff weakness, scapular dyskinesia (improper shoulder blade movement), tight chest muscles from prolonged swimming posture, and overuse from a sudden increase in training volume. Simply resting wasn't enough — the underlying muscle imbalances needed to be addressed.
The Treatment Plan
Our physiotherapy approach included:
- Manual therapy for pain relief and improved shoulder mobility
- Rotator cuff strengthening with progressive resistance exercises
- Scapular stabilization exercises to correct shoulder blade movement
- Chest and anterior shoulder stretching to improve posture
- Gradual return-to-swimming protocol with modified training loads
- Stroke technique assessment to reduce future injury risk
The Result
After 8 weeks of physiotherapy, the swimmer was back to full training with no pain. More importantly, the corrective exercises addressed the root cause of her injury, meaning she was less likely to experience the same problem again. She went on to compete in her next state-level competition and achieved a personal best time.
Key Lesson
Rest alone rarely fixes overuse injuries. Without addressing the underlying muscle imbalances and biomechanical issues, the pain simply returns when you resume activity. Physiotherapy identifies and fixes the root cause, not just the symptoms.
