What is Post Shoulder Replacement Rehab?

Shoulder replacement surgery, also known as shoulder arthroplasty, involves replacing the damaged parts of the shoulder joint with artificial components. It is typically performed when severe arthritis, a complex fracture, or a massive rotator cuff tear has destroyed the joint beyond what conservative treatment can manage.

After surgery, rehabilitation is essential to achieve the best possible outcome. The new joint provides the potential for improved movement and reduced pain, but it is the rehabilitation process that turns that potential into real functional gains.

Recovery after shoulder replacement follows a carefully structured timeline. In the early weeks, the focus is on protecting the surgical repair while gently maintaining range of motion.

Strengthening exercises are introduced gradually, typically starting around six weeks after surgery.

Patients who commit to their rehabilitation programme consistently achieve better outcomes than those who do not. The quality of physiotherapy you receive after shoulder replacement directly influences how much movement and function you ultimately regain.

At Kinesio Rehab, we have experience guiding patients through each phase of shoulder replacement recovery, from the first gentle movements after surgery to full functional independence.

Our Post Shoulder Replacement Rehab Treatment Process

1

Assessment

We review your surgical report, assess your current range of motion, pain levels, and wound healing status. We confirm your surgeon's specific precautions and movement restrictions.

2

Diagnosis

We identify your current functional limitations and determine which areas need the most attention, ensuring our treatment plan aligns with your surgical procedure and healing timeline.

3

Treatment Plan

We design a phased rehabilitation programme that respects your surgeon's protocols, starting with gentle protected movement and progressing through strengthening to full functional activities.

4

Active Treatment

Through regular sessions, we guide you from passive range of motion through active movement to progressive strengthening. Each phase builds on the previous one, with advancement based on healing milestones.

5

Recovery & Prevention

We restore your ability to perform daily activities independently, build a long-term maintenance programme to protect your new joint, and educate you on activity guidelines for the life of your replacement.

Post Shoulder Replacement Rehab — FAQs

When should I start physiotherapy after shoulder replacement?

Physiotherapy typically begins within the first week after surgery, often starting in the hospital with gentle passive movements. Outpatient rehabilitation usually starts one to two weeks post-surgery. Early mobilisation within your surgeon's guidelines is essential for preventing excessive stiffness and promoting optimal healing.

How long is the recovery after shoulder replacement?

Most patients achieve good functional use of their shoulder by three to four months, with continued improvements up to 12 months post-surgery. Sling use typically ends around four to six weeks. Active strengthening begins around six weeks. Full recovery, including return to recreational activities, usually takes six to twelve months.

What activities should I avoid after shoulder replacement?

You should generally avoid heavy lifting, high-impact activities, and contact sports permanently after shoulder replacement. Activities like swimming, golf, and light fitness training are usually possible once you have recovered. Your surgeon and physiotherapist will provide specific guidelines based on your type of replacement and activity goals.

Can I drive after shoulder replacement surgery?

Most patients can return to driving approximately six to eight weeks after surgery, once they have regained adequate range of motion and strength to handle the steering wheel safely, and are no longer taking strong pain medication. Your physiotherapist will help you determine when you meet these criteria.
