What is Elbow Fracture Rehabilitation?

An elbow fracture involves a break in one or more of the three bones that form the elbow joint: the humerus, radius, or ulna. These fractures commonly result from falls onto an outstretched hand, direct blows to the elbow, or high-impact injuries during sport or road accidents.

The elbow is one of the most challenging joints to rehabilitate after a fracture because it is highly prone to stiffness. Even a short period of immobilisation can lead to significant loss of bending and straightening movement, and scar tissue forms readily around the joint.

Treatment for elbow fractures may involve a cast or splint for stable fractures, or surgery with plates, screws, or wires for displaced or complex fractures. Regardless of how the fracture is managed, physiotherapy is essential for regaining movement and function afterward.

Early and appropriate mobilisation after an elbow fracture is critical. Starting physiotherapy at the right time, as guided by your orthopaedic surgeon, helps prevent the excessive stiffness that is the most common complication of elbow fractures.

At Kinesio Rehab, we work closely with your surgeon to begin rehabilitation at the optimal time and use gentle, progressive techniques to restore your elbow movement, strength, and function safely.

Common Problems We Solve

Inability to fully bend or straighten the elbow after cast removal
Stiffness that limits daily tasks like eating, dressing, or personal hygiene
Swelling and pain around the fracture site during recovery
Weakness in the arm, forearm, and hand grip after immobilisation
Fear of moving the elbow due to pain or concern about re-injury
Difficulty returning to work or sport after the fracture

Our Elbow Fracture Rehabilitation Treatment Process

1

Assessment

We review your surgical or medical reports, assess your current elbow range of motion, strength, swelling levels, and wound healing status. We confirm your surgeon's specific guidelines regarding movement restrictions and weight-bearing limits.

2

Diagnosis

We identify the specific movement and functional limitations resulting from the fracture and any associated soft tissue damage, allowing us to target the areas that need the most attention during rehabilitation.

3

Treatment Plan

We design a phased rehabilitation programme that respects bone healing timelines while prioritising early safe movement to combat stiffness. The plan progresses from gentle mobilisation through strengthening to full functional recovery.

4

Active Treatment

Regular sessions focus on progressively restoring elbow range of motion through joint mobilisation and stretching, rebuilding strength in the arm and grip, managing scar tissue, and retraining functional movements for daily life.

5

Recovery & Prevention

We work to restore maximum possible range of motion and full strength, ensure you can perform all necessary daily and work activities, and educate you on protecting the elbow during the continued bone remodelling phase.

Why Choose Kinesio Rehab for Elbow Fracture Rehabilitation

Elbow fracture rehabilitation demands precision and expertise because pushing too hard risks re-injury while being too cautious leads to permanent stiffness. At Kinesio Rehab, our physiotherapists understand this balance and have experience managing post-fracture elbows of all types.

We work closely with orthopaedic surgeons across the Klang Valley to ensure our treatment aligns perfectly with your surgical fixation and healing timeline. Our hands-on joint mobilisation techniques are particularly effective at restoring elbow range of motion that has been lost during immobilisation.

We track your progress meticulously and adjust the programme at every session to achieve the best possible outcome for your recovery.

Elbow Fracture Rehabilitation — FAQs

When should I start physiotherapy after an elbow fracture?

The timing depends on the type of fracture and how it was treated. For surgically fixed fractures, gentle range of motion exercises often begin within one to two weeks after surgery. For fractures treated with a cast, physiotherapy starts once the cast is removed, typically after four to six weeks. Early intervention is crucial because the elbow stiffens rapidly during immobilisation.

Will I regain full elbow movement after a fracture?

Many patients regain functional range of motion, though some may have a small residual loss of full extension or flexion, particularly after complex fractures. The functional range needed for most daily activities is achievable with dedicated rehabilitation. Starting physiotherapy early and being consistent with exercises gives you the best chance of recovering maximum movement.

Why is my elbow so stiff after the fracture healed?

The elbow joint is particularly prone to stiffness after injury because scar tissue and adhesions form readily within and around the joint capsule during immobilisation. The joint surfaces and surrounding soft tissues respond to even short periods of inactivity by tightening up. This is why physiotherapy with progressive mobilisation is so important after an elbow fracture.

Can I do strengthening exercises during elbow fracture recovery?

Strengthening exercises are introduced gradually based on your healing stage. In the early weeks, the focus is on range of motion rather than strength. Gentle grip and forearm exercises may begin around four to six weeks, with more demanding strengthening introduced once the fracture has sufficiently healed, typically around eight to twelve weeks post-injury.
